Abstract
420,611. Glass manufacture. SCHLESISCHE SPIEGELGLAS-MANUFACTUR C. TIELSCH GES., Altwasser, Waldenburg, Silesia, Germany. June 26, 1933, No. 18155. Convention date, July 2, 1932. [Class 56] Relates to a method of making compound sheet glass in which glass of any desired colour, or physical or chemical properties, is formed into a sheet by rolling and is then rolled on to a foundation sheet of different composition. According to the invention, the foundation sheet is made by rolling molten glass which flows continuously from a tank furnace, but the coloured glass is formed by intermittent rolling, so that compound glass of different qualities can be produced as required in any desired quantity and in any desired order. A pattern may be impressed on the sheets if required. The foundation glass b flows from a tank a between a pair of rollers c, d and is formed into a continuous sheet e. A strip f is also produced by a pair of rollers g, h on to which glass of different composition is poured from a pot or ladle p as and when required. The strip f is deposited on the sheet e, and is rolled into adhesion with it by a pair of rollers i, k. Additional apparatus can be provided if a third sheet is to be rolled on to the doubled sheet. The rolling-apparatus g, h may also be mounted between the wall of the tank a and the rollers c, d, in which case these rollers weld the coloured strips to the foundation sheet in course of formation. Also, either the roller c or the roller i can serve as one of the pair that forms the coloured strip f.
