426,770. Continuously casting composite strip. ARNOLD, C., 11, Southampton Buildings, Chancery Lane, London.-(Cleveland Graphite Bronze Co. ; 880, East 72nd Street, Cleveland, Ohio, U.S.A.) Oct. 13, 1934, No. 29377. [Class 83 (i)] A method of making composite bearing metal elements or strips comprises supporting a strip of metal within a cavity in a permanent mould, passing such mould through a chamber having a heating zone, filling out the cavity of the mould with molten bearing metal, and chilling the mould prior to withdrawing it from the chamber. The permanent moulds 4 may be passed continuously from left to right, Fig. 1, through the passage 5 in a heat resisting chamber 1 cross-sectional views of which, Figs. 2, 4 and 7, are numbered similarly to the section lines. The passage 5 at the left, Fig. 1, is made to surround completely three sides of the mould but opens out toward the right to provide clearance spaces 8, 9 through which molten bearing metal flows from the inlet 13 to pre-heat the moulds, this metal passes up through the opening 10 and along the trough 11 from which it is drained by the outlet 14 ; the passage for the moulds is closed at the top by a heat-resisting strip 6 which rests on the top of the moulds. The inlet 13 also supplies metals to the mould cavity which passes through the openings 22, 23 and out through the openings 24 in the top of the mould. At the right of the chamber the moulds are only supported top and bottom, Fig. 7, this enables cooling water to be sprayed against the sides by nozzles 20 ; waste metal which may adhere to the ouside of the moulds is discharged through outlets 25. The moulds are adapted to cast the composite bearing metal in sections of the requisite length, Fig. 12; the metal insert, Fig. 11, which may have flanged or plain edges is of steel and may be given a coating of bearing metal on one or both sides. The insert may be preliminarily prepared to receive the bearing metal such as by being pickled, washed, fluxed and tinned. A passage 38, Fig. 12, in the moulds gives communication between the mould cavity being chilled and the still heated moulds providing extra metal to the chilled mould as the metal therein contracts.
