Abstract

PURPOSE:To perform casting of good workability and cast ingot appearance by forming the overhang part of a receiving tank into a shape which makes stagnating of molten metal right thereunder difficult and forming a mold into the construction that permits uniform supplying of lubricating oil in a hot top casting method. CONSTITUTION:Molten metal 43 is supplied into a receiving tank 32, and a columnar body is formed together with a pool 44. This body is cooled by the inside wall of a mold 33 and the coolant from an ejecting port 35, whereby it is solidified to form a cast ingot 46. The bottom end of the overhang part near the bottom end of the tank 32 is formed with a short cylindrical suspending part 40 covering the upper part of the inside wall of the mold 33 and its inside circumferential surface forms a slope expanding downward. The outside circumferential surface of the part 40 has narrow clearance with the inside wall of the mold. On the other hand, the upper part of the inside wall of the mold 33 covered by the part 40 is heat-insulated by a heat insulating part 51, where a lubricant supply port is opened. The lubricant fills a pool 53, from which it goes through flow passages 54 and longitudinal fine grooves 55, is extruded into the gap on the rear side of the part 40 through the supply ports in the bottom end thereof, and spreads over the entire circumference of the inside wall 36 of the mold.
