Abstract

1,115,059. Continuous casting. KENNECOTT COPPER CORPORATION. 15 Sept., 1965 [15 Sept., 1964], No. 39447/65. Heading B3F. A graphite mandrel M for use in the vertical continuous casting of tubular metal billets comprises an upper chamber 13 for receiving and distributing molten metal and a cavity 16 extending longitudinally of the mandrel axis below the upper chamber and having means in the cavity 16 for cooling and for lubricating the mandrel. The distribution of the molten metal from the upper chamber to the mould is effected through radial ducts D, the chamber 13 forming a reservoir. The lower cavity has a graphite core 18 located therein which is provided with a helical groove 19 which is connected to a source of pressurized gas which permeates through the pores of the graphite to lubricate the mandrel. In another embodiment, a cooling coil 22 is located around the core so that the mandrel may be cooled and lubricated simultaneously. Alternatively, the cooling coil may be located around a plain core to effect cooling only.
