Abstract
336,727. Harris, H. Aug. 27, 1929. Casting-machines ; moulds. - In continuous casting by feeding molten metal to a convergent space between two moving surfaces, the temperature and head of metal are kept at a value which will cause the metal to be solidified and then compressed and moulded in the gap between the surfaces. The space 3 between the rollers 1, 2 is formed into a hopper by end plate 4 which may serve as a weir to keep a constant level, excess metal passing through an outlet 6. In a modification, the metal is supplied to the hopper at a constant rate by a nozzle 12, Fig. 3, connected to a tank or tanks 14, kept at a fixed level by floatoperated valves 16 or an adjustable overflow 26, Fig. 4. The nozzle may take the form of a perforated pipe 12 or a chamber 19 with a slot 18 of adjustable width. The chamber 19 may be heated by gas burners 21 and the hot gases may be conducted over the conduits 13, 24 and tanks 23, 15 by casings 40, Fig. 4. The plates 4 may have tapering projections 28, Fig. 7, to engage the space 3. The rollers 1, 2 may be cooled internally by water supplied by pipes 8, Fig. 1, and discharged by flanges 10 and funnels 11. The faces of the rollers may be patterned or grooved and between them may be fed a strip of solid metal which becomes united to the metal cast. The apparatus may operate wholly or partly in neutral or reducing gas. The Provisional Specification describes the cooling of the surfaces by immersion in water or circulation of water through them and also a machine in which the gap is partly occupied by a partition or core.
