Abstract
436,654. Drying paper. SPOONER, W. W., Ashbrook, Ilkley, Yorkshire. April 16, 1934, No. 11373. [Class 34 (i)] Paper, board, or like material is dried by applying one side of the paper to a heated metallic surface, while a drying fluid such as heated air, gas or steam is applied to the other side in the form of a number of high velocity jets which are at an angle to the paper. The drying fluid flows in a closed circuit in which it is heated and its pressure head maintained. The velocity of the fluid may be between 10 and 32 feet per second. The paper may be passed over a heated cylinder 3, past air jets from convergent sets of nozzles 12, 13 in a casing 11. From the paper the air is drawn back into a hood 1 by a fan 6, which passes the air through a duct 8 to a steam heater 9 and the casing 11. The jets of fluid extend continuously across the width of the paper. The hood may be hinged about a pivot 4. More than one nozzle casing or fan may be provided under a single hood, and several hoods may be applied to one cylinder. Valved ports for fresh and used air may be provided. The drying fluid may be applied to the paper in a bight between three consecutive cylinders.
