Abstract

396,106. Drying materials in long lengths. SPOONER, W. W., Ashbrook, Ilkley, Yorkshire. Dec. 29, 1931, No. 3295/33. Divided on 388,167. Drawings to Specification. [Class 34 (i).] Material such as cloth or warp is traversed along a given path and a gaseous fluid such as air is caused to flow in a succession of paths part of which coincides with the path of the web, the fluid being projected on to the web at an angle thereto, and at a relatively high velocity. The speed of the fluid as it leaves the fan or passes through nozzles may be 80 feet per second, so that on reaching the material it will have a speed of say 28 feet per second. The speed of the fluid may be boosted up or increased at spaced localities on the path of the material. For drying, air may be projected first on to the driest part of the web and then on to a wetter part, and for conditioning after drying, leak-off air from the drying cycle may be cooled and introduced into the conditioning cycle. During its flow in or between successive cycles the fluid may be subjected to different treatments, e.g. heating and then cooling. It is preferred to project the fluid simultaneously on to both sides of the web. The process may be carried out as described in Specification 388,167 with reference to Fig. 7 thereof, and the forms shown in Figs. 1 to 6 of the said Specification may be utilized as units of a succession of closed paths, being modified where necessary to give connection between the successive paths.
