In a method for conditioning web or sheet like material, moisture is supplied to the material by blowing a heated, moist, gaseous medium against one surface of the material and at the same time blowing a cold, moist, gaseous medium against the opposite surface of the material, thereby continuously conducting away the heat released by the condensation of the moisture. The moisturesupplying medium may be heated moist air or steam and the conditioning may be carried out in two or more steps, the blowing sides for the heated and the cold mediums being alternately changed over. As shown the treatment is carried out in a closed chamber 1 having an inlet 2 and an outlet 3 for the material 4. The chamber is divided into three separate sections A, B, C each of which has a circulation fan 5 which presses the medium into a distribution box 7 having openings 8, such that the medium is blown against the upper surface of the web. The medium is returned via tubes 9 and heating and humidifying means to the inlet side of fan 5. A similar fan 12, distribution box 14 &c. together with cooling means is provided on the underside of the web 4. Shield means are provided on both sides of the web edges to prevent mixing of the two media and they are preferably constructed so that they form a longitudinal passage for sucking-off a portion of each of said media.
