Abstract

1452382 Drying webs AER CORP 13 March 1974 [4 April 1973] 11226/74 Heading F4G A system for drying a wet web of fibrous material comprises a plurality of drier units 12, 14, 16, 18 each having an air input section 38 and an air outlet section 40, means, e.g. a frame, mounting the units in series between a web input end and a web outlet end of the system, a support of air pervious material for carrying the web through the units between the sections 38, 40, means for supplying heated air to the air input section of one of the units relatively adjacent the web outlet, means for directing air from the outlet section of the one unit to the input section of another unit relatively adjacent the web input, and means for removing air from the outlet section of the other unit. As shown four drier units 12, 14, 16, 18 are provided and these are connected in "half cascade" i.e. alternate ones are connected as disclosed above. Fresh, heated air is supplied by a fan 132, 170 to each first unit in the series, the air being heated downstream of the fan by a burner 136, 174. Fans and burners are provided in the other connections. Used exhausted air from the system is used to heat incoming fresh air in heat exchangers 128, 166. Alternatively the four units may be connected in cascade (Fig. 6, not shown). Provision is provided for either allowing heated air to enter a unit or for diverting the heated air to exhaust the circulation of air being controlled by thermocouples 228 placed in the units. Each unit is provided with air distribution plates 58, (68), one in each section 38, 40 and the section 40 has a variable position deckle system(s) 86 for supporting the longitudinal edges of the support of air pervious material and forming a seal therewith. The main body of the support is supported by a plurality of angularly adjustable, laterally extending rods 78 with which the deckle system(s) operate. Positioned above the deckle system 86 is a variable position means 120, 116, 118 for providing a curtain of cool air to prevent the longitudinal regional portions of the support from being overheated. In the unit 18 adjacent the web outlet. The air distribution plate of the air outlet section is provided with a plurality of parallel, longitudinally extending partitions having variable position dampers therebetween for controlling the flow of air therethrough (Fig. 3, not shown). Thus the drying capacity of the unit may be varied.
