Abstract

Catalysts for use in the hydration of olefines comprise one or two molecular proportions of aluminium metaphosphate associated with about one molecular proportion of a metaphosphate of calcium, cadmium, zinc, or divalent copper, nickel, tin or lead. The hydration is preferably carried out in the vapour phase at temperatures of 250--300 DEG C. and at pressures of 100 atmospheres or over. There is also preferably a large excess of olefine relative to water vapour, the gaseous products being cooled to separate an aqueous solution of the alcohol, and the surplus olefine being recirculated. The catalyst may be prepared by dissolving the metals or their oxides or suitable salts in aqueous orthophosphoric acid, evaporating the solution and drying the solid product at a temperature increasing up to but not exceeding 300 DEG C. Specifications 369,216 and 407,722 are referred to.
