434,296. Vehicle spring-suspensions. GOTHAER WAGGONFABRIK AKT.-GES., Gotha, Germany. June 9, 1934, No. 17176. Convention date, June 9, 1933. [Class 108 (ii)] [See also Group XXXI] A low-platform semi-trailer combination for transporting railway vehicles over roads is characterized by a tractor having three trailing wheels on each side of the frame, each set comprising a side-by-side pair of wheels d and behind these a wheel e farther from the frame than the inner wheel of the pair so as to provide steering clearance, the trailer being pivotally connected to the tractor at a point between and below the level of the tops of the trailing wheels. The trailer, Figs. 2 and 3, is furnished with channel rails b to guide the wheels of the railway vehicle well forward and, at its rear end, is mounted through the medium of springs g and equalizing levers h on wheels c, the stub axles of which are formed on transverse arms f pivoted to the trailer frame at their inner ends b<1>. The tractor wheels d, which are mounted on the ends of a cross bar o<2>, Fig. 4, are connected by chain or toothed gears in casings A<1> to differentials A at the ends of cross shafts A<2> driven through a central differential A<3> by the engine. The third wheel e of each set may be mounted on an extension o of the crossbar o<2>, Fig. 4, the tractor frame s being supported thereon by springs i, and guides o<1> being provided to prevent wheel wobble. Alternatively, as shown in Figs. 2 and 5, the spring i may comprise the connection between the crossbar o<2> and the stub axle of the wheel e, the tractor frame bearing thereon by means of a transverse girder member k, Fig. 2, or shaped member t, Fig. 5, fixed at one edge to the tractor frame and arched over the wheels d, its other edge carrying inverted cups l seated on rounded bosses on the springs.
