Abstract
406,537. Motor vehicles. SMEETS, H. R. M. G., Abdijhof, Roermond, Holland. June 12, 1933, No. 16781. Convention date, July 1, 1932. [Classes 79 (iii) and 79 (iv).] In a motor truck or tractor provided with two engines 2, 3, one on each side of the longitudinal central plane of the vehicle, each engine drives a separate rear axle 5, 6, provided with at least two road wheels and located on the same side of the central plane as the engine. Preferably standard light car parts are utilized to minimize initial cost and facilitate replacements. The assemblage comprises a pair of standard light truck frames 14, each with engine, radiator, propeller shaft &c. attached to two main cross beams 12 on opposite sides of a central longitudinal pair of beams 11 shaped to the taper of the frames 14 and connected at their forward ends to a transverse spring 15 mounted on the front axle, which is arranged in front of the frames 14 with steering clearance. A rear frame portion 13, also attached to the cross beams 12, is supported on the rear axles 5, 6, by springs (not shown). The rear axles, which need not be in alignment, are spaced apart sufficiently to allow replacements of the inner wheels or tyres.
