Abstract

433,977. Centrifugal pumps. BOWERS, D. W., 5820, North Park Avenue, Philadelphia, U.S.A. May 8, 1934, No. 13855. Convention date, July 18, 1933. [Class 110 (i)] [See also Group XII] In treating gas with liquid the gas is passed through a radially-bladed high speed centrifugal blower through the hub of which liquid is introduced so as to be projected in sheet form along the blade surfaces and to traverse a space between the blade ends and the blower wall in the form of large drops. A peripheral velocity of over 11,500 feet per minute is preferably maintained, the drops being about 1-4 mm. in diameter. An impeller 26 rotatable within a chamber 25 comprises radial blades 27 which may have openings 28 to induce a small amount of misting of the liquid to humidify the gas admitted through an axial inlet 24. A liquid inlet 22 supplies a hollow hub terminal 30 communicating through axially extending ports 31 with outlet ports 32 arranged in alignment with the blades. The peripheral wall may be lined with rubber, lead, &c. 33. In a furnace gas scrubbing plant, the gases are first quenched with water or other liquid and then passed through the blower the tangential discharge from which communicates with a centrifugal slime and gas separator. Liquid outlets from the quenching chamber and separator depend into a sludge tank whence liquid is recirculated to the quenching chamber and blower. Testing apparatus comprises two wet cyclones and an intervening blower all supplied by a common pump.
