Abstract
431,880. Surface and outline gauges. PERRIER, J., Callestick Farm, Selsdon Vale, Selsdon, South Croydon. Feb. 13, 1934, No. 4798. [Class 106 (ii)] Comprises a frame carrying two rows of hard balls angularly spaced apart on the surface of an imaginary cylinder so that a cylinder placed on them makes contact with all the balls, and a single tactile member freely disposed on the cylinder opposite and between the rows of balls and connected to an indicator. The hollow frame 1 having a boss 2 projecting laterally therefrom is fitted with a hard steel liner 3 within which is a cylindrical housing 4 carrying two rows of steel balls 5 lodged in slots 6. The slots are undercut so that the balls project through to form line supports for the test piece. At each end of the frame is a boss housing a spring 8 which bears on a ball 9 projecting through holes in the liner and housing. A central ball 13 projects through similar holes and engages the feeler 14 of an indicating device. In use the work is inserted into the housing and rested on the rows of balls 5. Screws 15 are then turned to cause the springs 8 to press the balls 9 against the work and the latter against the balls 5. The work is then rotated and the indicator reading noted. In a modification, the balls may be housed in undercut slots in the frame, being inserted from the open end of the slot. The ends of the slots are closed by rings secured to the frame. These are split and provided with means for forcing one half against the other. A disc fitting the interior of the boss slides therein and forms a cage for a ball engaging the plunger 14. In this construction, the whole casing may be split and the two parts hinged at one side so that the gauge may be placed around the work between collars.
