Abstract

530,117. Linear-dimension gauge. READING, H. C., and DASHWOOD ENGINEERING, Ltd. June 3, 1939, No. 16376. [Class 106 (ii)] Comprises a particular construction of calliper type gauge having pivoted legs and reading means for indicating the displacement of the gauge points. The legs 10, 11 are made in one piece, Fig. 2, having a slot 30 separating the legs which are joined at the ends. While still joined a socket 39 is formed leaving the legs joined by webs 32, and by a web 36 at the other end. Holes 34, 35 are made to receive fixing screws for the gauge members, holes 37 for the attachment of hinge plates 12 and a hole 38 for the hinge pin 13. Any other machining operations are performed at this stage. The webs 32, 36 are then cut away. The gauge members are also formed in one piece. A disc having a cylindrical spigot is made to correct size and parts of the disc may be removed to give 3-point contact, and the spigot is fitted into the socket 39 and secured to the legs while still in one piece. The leg 10 is adapted at one end to receive a dial gauge 26 the plunger 27 of which engages an adjustable stud 28 on the leg 11 which has a handle 20. A lever 21 is pivoted at 22 to the leg 11 and one end carries a roller 23 which engages the conical head 24 of a stud carried by the leg 10. To use the gauge the lever 21 and handle are gripped and the spring 19 compressed to insert the gauge members into the hole. They are then released and the dial gauge read.
