Abstract
405,408. Gauging - apparatus. FORWARD, W. I., Mytholm, Belvoir Drive, Aylestone, Leicester. Oct. 14, 1932, No. 28741. [Class 106 (ii).] A particular construction is described for gauging the alignment of connecting rods. A mandrel 1, Fig. 1, is provided at the central part 2 with two parallel edges 3 which co-operate with a screw 4 between them to form a three point contact when the mandrel is inserted in the big end of a connecting rod and expanded to engage it. The mandrel is of such length as to project on each side of the big end bearing 5, Fig. 3, the projecting parts 1 being circular and parallel. A rod 7 fast with a collar 8 bored to fit the pin 1 is now placed over one projecting end and a sliding part 9 on the rod adjusted so that the flat 13 engages the top of the gudgeon pin 14 or equivalent at the little end of the connecting rod whereupon the part 9 is clamped by the screw 12. The rod 7 is then removed and the connecting rod being turned round so that the gauge rod can be placed upon the other projecting pin 1. If the flat 13 just engages the other projecting end of the gudgeon pin, the little and big end bores are parallel. The flat 13 may be set to extend in the same direction as the gudgeon pin. The gauge plate 9 may be provided with holes for the attachment of a gauge having a scale and feeler. In another form a dial gauge with feeler may be mounted on the rod 7. For testing the alignment in the direction at right angles to the above direction the device shown in Fig. 8 is used. This comprises two coplanar narrow surfaces or edges 30 formed on flanges rising from a base 28. The connecting rod with mandrel 1 and gudgeon inserted is then placed on the edges and any rocking observed.
