H. G. PECK.
GAGE.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 14, 1919.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GAGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 2, 1920.
Application filed March 14., 1919. Serial No. 282,538.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT G. PnoK, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Bloomfield, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gages, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in measuring instruments such as gages, particularly to the class adapted to measure the distances between threads, recesses and the like upon rods, taps, bolts and the like, and has for its object to provide a gage comprising a suitable support having adjustable pins or the like for spacing according to the threads, etc. upon the articles to be gaged, with means to regulate the space between said pins according to the requirements, and for maintaining the elements of the gage in inset relation.
My invention comprises novel details of improvement that will be more fully hereinafter set forth and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompany ing drawings, forming part hereof, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a gage embodying my invention; a
Fig. 2 is a side view, partly in section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a cross section on the line 33 in Fig. 1;
Fig. l is a plan View of a modification;
Fig. 5 is a side view of Fig. 4;
Figs. 6 and 7 are respectively cross sections on lines 66 and 7-7 in Fig. 5; and
Fig. 8 is an end view of Fig. 5 partly in section.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
The numeral 1 indicates a support shown in elongated form adapted to support members 2 and blocks 3. In Figs. 1, 2 and 3 said support is shown in the form of a frame having a longitudinal space a opening through the top and bottom thereof and closed at the opposite ends adapted to re ceive portions of members 2 and blocks 3. The members 2 are shown as having relatively narrow portions 2 to fit within the space 4 and widened lowered portions provided with recesses 2 shown in V-like form adapted to receive and fit upon an article to be gaged such as a screw, tap, bolt or the like 5.. The members 2 are shown provided with shoulders 2 (Fig. 3) to fit against the opposing surfaces of the side bars of support 1 whereby the V-like recesses 2 of several members 2 may be set and maintained in the same plane for the purpose of maintaining the gage in proper position upon the article 5 to be gaged. The blocks 3 are provided with longitudinal holes 3 (Fig. 2) adapted to receive pins or the like 6 which are provided with tapering or-sharpened ends 6 adapted to fit in the threads 5 of the article to be gaged. At 7 are gage blocks adapted to fit adjustably in space 4 of support 1 between. spaced blocks 3 and members 2, as well as between pin blocks 3 for the purpose of maintaining said members and blocks in spaced relation gaged according to the measurement required. The blocks 7 are of any desired width so as to be interchanged between member 2 and block 3, or between the blocks 3. At 8 is a screw threaded in a block-like end portion 1 of support 1 and adapted to be pressed against a block 3 to maintain all of said blocks, members 2 and gage blocks 7 in secure set relation in the support.
In Figs. l to 8 the support is shown in the form of rods 1 shown spaced apart upon a pin block 3 and block l in which block 1 the screw 8 is threaded. Said blocks 3 and l have holes provided with means to receive rods 1 whereby the latter are spaced apart to receive in the space l therebetween the appropriate portions of one or more members 2, pin blocks 3 and gaging blocks 7. Said pin blocks and block 1 are shown secured to rods 1 by means of screws 9, whereby said blocks may be set along rods 1 in desired spaced relation and said rods and blocks will be securely united. One of the members 2 is shown provided with holes 2 whereby the latter is adjustably maintained upon rods 1 while any desired number of other members 2 may have narrowed portions 2 to adjustably fit between said rods. The latter member or members may have shoulders 2 (Fig. 6) whereby the V-like recess 2 of such member or members may be maintained set in the same plane with the other member or members for centering the members upon an article 5. The pin blocks 3 fit in space a between rods 1 and may be providedwith plungers or shoulders 3 Fig. 7, to fit against said rods for locating said blocks in side of Fig. 5 being shown provided with two pins 6.
While the tapering ends of pins 6 are shown entered in the threads 5 it will be understood that one of the pins 6 may be set at 5 (Fig. 2) in the space at the shank of the article 5 or at the beginning of the threads thereon to measure therefrom by means of one or'more other pins 6,
In accordance with my improvements, when it is desired to measure distances'between threads, recesses, teeth and the like upon an article 5, such as a rod, tap, bolt, screw or the like, the pin blocks 3 will be adjusted along the support to the positions required to enter the tapering ends of the corresponding pins in the threads, recesses relation upon, support 1 as a standard,
wherebyto measure or gage articles having threads, recesses or the like, the members 2 and blocks 3 with the required interposed gage blocks 7 may be assembled and maintained set, whereby the appropriate pins 6 may be placed upon the threads, recesses or the like as the work progresses.
The V-like recesses in spaced members 2 are maintained on a plane so that when adjusted upon the article to be gaged all the members of the gage will be alined alongthe article and maintained in parallelism in all directions with respect to the article, by pressing the latter into such recesses. Any desired number of members 2 may be provided in spaced relation on the support with relation to the pin blocks 3. V
Y My invention is simple and cheap to manufacture, may be readily operated, and is most accurate in the use of gage blocks, such as those commonly called Johansson gages, when used as standards.
While I have illustrated and described a specific embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that changes may be madein the arrangement set forth without de arting from the spirit of my invention.
Iaving thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A measuring instrument comprising a support, members carried thereby having means for cooperationwith an article to be gaged 'for positioning the members, blocks having adjustable pins to cooperate with said article, and means to maintain said blocks in spaced measured relation in said support. r
2. A measuringinstrumentcomprising a support, members having means for cooperation with an article to be gaged for positioning the members, blocks having adjustable pins to cooperate with said article, and gage blocks adapted to be interposed between said pins, and means to maintain said members and blocks in spaced gaged relation for cooperation ofsaid pins with said article.
3. A measuring instrument comprising a support, members having recesses to cooperate with an article to be gaged for maintaining said members in position thereon, blocks having adjustable pins to cooperate with said article, and means to maintain said pins and'members in spaced gagedrelation. r
, 4:. A measuring instrument comprising asupport, members having recesses to .cooper-.
ate with an article to be gaged, for maintaining said members in position thereon, blocks having adjustable pins to cooperate with said article and gage blocks interposed between said pins, and means to maintain said members and blocks in spaced gaged relation. 1
5.A measuring instrument comprising a support having an interiorspace, members gagedtomaintain the members in alinement spaced relation, and means to retain said members and blocks in said relation.
7. A measuring instrument comprising a tween said pins, and means to maintain support having an interior space, members said members and blocks with said pins in having reduced portions in said space and spaced gaged relation. 10 provided with recesses to cooperate with an Signed at New York, in the county of 5 article to be gaged, blocks in said space New York and State of New York this 13th provided With adjustable pins, gage blocks day of March, A. D. 1919. in said space adapted to be interposed be- HERBERT Gr. PEGK.
