Abstract

596,970. Gauges. JOHNSON, P. W. April 27, 1944, Nos. 7895, 7896, 7897 and 7898. Convention dates, March 23, 1943, June 14, 1943, June 15, 1943, and Aug. 17, 1943. [Class 106 (ii)] A snap gauge for testing round parts comprises a concave gauging member pivoted to a frame carrying a complementary gauging member so that the concave member can pivot to an open position for insertion of a test piece and then move to the gauging position. Both members may have concave gauging surfaces or may comprise convex members adapted to contact the work-piece at spaced points. Alternatively, the complementary member is a roller. The concave gauge members 11, 13, Fig. 1, are mounted on pivots 12, 14 in a frame 10. Springs 20 secured to the members by screws 21 normally maintain the members in the open position. When a piece being tested is passed through the gauge, the ends 26 of the springs engage recesses 25 to retain the members in the open exit position. Screws 35 may be advanced into the recesses to prevent this retention. " Not go " gauge rollers 30, 31 may be included in the frame. Pivots of gauge members or rollers may be eccentric for adjustment as shown in Fig. 5 for pivot 14. Lateral movement of the gauge member 13 against a spring washer 43 is allowed for in a screw gauge. In a modification, Fig. 7, each concave gauging member is replaced by gauge rollers 53, 55 carried in a concave member 50 with a pivot bearing 51. In a taper gauge, Fig. 9, spring washers 75, 76 retain the gauge members 62, 61 in the released position and a spring-loaded pin 78 may be operated to engage a hole 81 in the member 61 to lock it in the gauging position.. A spring- loaded pin 87, Fig. 10, carries " go " and '' not go " projections 91, 90 for gauging the position of the bottom face of the taper body under test. Alternatively, sighting shoulders 96, 97, Fig. 12, are provided in the gauge member. The gauge in Fig. 11 employs gauge rollers 103, 104 mounted in a pivoted member 101 abutting a stop 108 in the gauging position and a cooperating roller 105 with a circumferential sighting land 106. In the screw gauge shown in Fig. 14, gauging members 123, 140 are pivoted to a frame 110 and abut adjustable stops 127, 45 in the gauging position. Complementary gauging members 130, 141 are carried by a slide loaded by a spring 119 and abutting a stop 115 and the contact pin 154 of an indicator 153. The roller 130 has three sectors of different radius for checking different parts of the thread. The members 140, 141 form a ring gauge.
