430,169. Thermionic cathodes. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., 63, Aldwych, London.-(Assignees of Wilson, J. R. ; 15, Lowell Avenue, Mountain Lakes, New Jersey, Acker, J. T.; 110, 213th Street, Queen's Village, New York, and Hartman, C. D. ; 69, Orville Street, Forest Hills, New York, both in U.S.A.) Dec. 14, 1933, No. 35202. Convention date, June 30. [Class 39 (i)] A coating-composition comprises barium and strontium carbonates, a compound of a metal or metals of the eighth group of the periodic system, and a fluid suspension medium. A binder may be added. The mixture is coated on the core, heated to evaporate the suspension medium, mounted in situ and heated to decompose the compounds to oxides. The oxide of the metal of the eighth group is reduced to the metal by a reducing gas, and a portion of the alkaline earth oxide to the metal by electron bombardment in carbon monoxide. Barium and strontium carbonates may be mixed with nickelous carbonate, together with nitrocellulose dissolved in amylacetate. Barium and strontium nitrates may be added to form a low temperature fusible bond. Instead of nickel, iron, cobalt, palladium, platinum or nickel - platinum may be used. The cathode may be activated by glowing it in a hydrocarbon vapour of the paraffin series such as methane, as described in Specification 430,170.
