Abstract
424,195. Fluorescent screens. LEVY, L. A., WEST, D. W., 31, Shoot-up Hill, Cricklewood, London, and ILFORD, Ltd., 23, Roden Street, lIford, Essex. July 11, 1933, No. 19609. [Class 98 (i)] A screen for X-ray or cathode-ray work, exhibiting little after-glow or persistence of latent image, comprises zinc sulphide, or a mixture of zinc and cadmium sulphides, with or without an activator such as silver, and containing minute traces of nickel. The ratio of nickel to the sulphide or sulphide mixture lies between about 1/500,000 and 1/3,000,000, and is preferably 1 /1,000,000. The screen may contain a non-active binder such as gelatin, or cellulose nitrate or acetate. The sulphide is prepared in a highly pure state, as free as possible from heavy metals such as copper, iron, manganese, or vanadium, and preferably also from lighter metals such as alkali or alkaline earth metals ; the activator (e.g. silver in the form of a salt) and nickel (e.g. in the form of chloride) are added ; and the whole is uniformly mixed and heated strongly, e.g. to 1200-1300‹ C., if desired in the presence of a fusible salt, e.g. sodium chloride. The Provisional Specification refers also to cobalt as an alternative to nickel.
