429,425. Roller mills. TUNLEY, A. A., BAKER, G. R., and BAKER PERKINS, Ltd., Westwood Works, Peterborough, and ANCIENS ETABLISSEMENTS A. SAVY, JEANJEAN, & CIE, Avenue Dubonnet, Courbevoie, Seine, France. Oct. 25, 1933, No. 29552. [Class 59] Refiner &c. rolls are cooled by maintaining a body of water within the roll, circulating it at a rapid rate (such as 10-12 gallons per minute) and causing the water to pass in contact with the inner periphery of the roll through a series of restricted passages spaced apart axially of the roll. The roll 1, Fig. 1, has a hollow trunnion 5 through which passes a cooling- water inlet pipe 9, the discharge taking place between the pipe and the bore through the trunnion. A series of baffles 8 spaced apart by distance pieces 10 are inserted in the roll, one or both of the end baffles being secured against a rebate in the cylinder by the end flange 7. Water is admitted between the baffles through holes 18 and circulates over the peripheral edge of each baffle either through slots or gaps 16 formed therein. Longitudinal baffles may also be inserted in the cylinders. The cylinders may be filled partly or completely with water. The circulating system, for a series of rolls is shown in Fig. 3 in which a pump 20 supplies water to each roll through a valve 26, the discharge from the rolls falling into a tank 22 provided with a supply pipe 24 and an overflow pipe 25 whereby the temperature of the water may be varied.
