1 Claim.
This invention relates to roller mills of the type used for the grinding of paints and like material. During the use of such machines it is necessary that the roller be reground or otherwise repaired from time to time, and repairs of other parts may be required, particularly in connection with theroller unit of the machine.
The roller unit comprises a plurality of rollers mounted in bearing boxes and driven from a motor through a train of gears. The unit also includes end plates which are used to confine the material to be ground between two rollers and prevent it from overflowing. Certain roller adjusting means are also included in the unit.
When any one or more of these parts require repairs it or they must be removed and sent to the repair shop. When the parts are returned they must be remounted and fitted into the machine. While the repairing is being attended to. the machine necessarily stands idle. Also, when a repaired part is returned, it is often necessary that further work must be done in order to fit the part accurately into the mechanism. All of this takes time, is expensive and the results are not always entirely satisfactory,
This invention has for its object to construct the roller unit of a roller mill as a separate mechanism arranged to be removed from the machine as an entire unit and shipped to the repair shop. While being repaired, a spare unit may quickly be mounted upon the machine for continued operation. Thus a manufacturer may have a spare unit on hand at all times so that repairs may be attended to without having the machine stand idle.
The invention is embodied in a roller mill in which the roller unit is supported on a detachable base, the latter in turn being mountable upon the bed of the machine. In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention many details of a roller mill are omitted as not being necessary for an understanding of the invention. In said drawings Fig. l is a front view of the machine with parts in section and parts broken away, the view being substantially on the line ll of Fig. 2.
Fig. 2 is a side view, partly in section and partly broken away, looking in the direction of the arrow 2 in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a view showing the roller unit and the machine with the roller unit detached.
The roller unit comprises three grinding rollers 4, 5 and 6 with end plates 1 between the rollers 5 and 5 where the material to be ground is placed, The rollers rotate in the directions of the arrows in the drawing and are driven by a train of gears 8 operated from a motor 9 by means of a chain Ill. The material is ground between the rollers 5 and '6 and then carried around between the rollers 5 and 4 for a second grinding and. is then scraped off by an inclined pan or spout l2 which is pivoted in the usual manner on a bracket l4, details not being shown.
The rollers are mounted in pairs'of roller bearing boxes l6, l1 and IS. The boxes are on each side of the machine slidably supported on keys l9, 19 which are fitted in and supported by upstanding side rails 20 of a base plate 2| which is detachably secured to the bed frame 23 of the machine by bolts as at 22, 22. A head piece 24 rests upon the boxes on each side of the machine and is secured to the side rails 20 by suitable bolting as at 26, 26. The head piece 24 is spaced vertically from the side rail by posts 21, 21, front and rear, so as to permit the bearings to slide on the rails and at the same time support them on the ends of the rollers as will be understood. When the parts are secured together the said base plate 2| with side rails 20 support the entire roller unit.
The front and rear roller bearing boxes l6 and I8 are movable toward the middle box [1 by means of adjusting screw mechanisms 28, 29, 30 which are operated through the posts 21 in a known manner. The boxes are separated by the usual springs 32. The end plates are pivoted in brackets 33 bolted to the pieces 24. The rollers are water cooled from a manifold 35 to which are connected water pipes 36, one inside each roller. Water is supplied from the local Water supply in any suitable manner, not shown. Each water pipe is controlled by a valve 40, Suitable covers 42 are provided and are as usually detachably secured.
The entire roller unit is supported upon the base plate 2|. Therefore, by removing the covers 42 and detaching the chain Ill from the gearing 8, and by removing the bolts 22, the plate 21 with the roller unit may be lifted off of the machine and removed sideways away from the water cooling means which remains on the bed frame. Fig. 3 shows the unit removed from the machine and resting upon a temporary support 50 to be sent away for repairs. A spare unit may then quickly be secured in place upon the bed frame and operation carried on.
In the manufacture of roller mills of this type, the roller unit may be a ready made entity available for mounting upon the machine whenever required. Much time and expense will be saved by quickly mounting a new unit upona machine while a used unit is being repaired.
When the roller unit is to be detached from the machine the water supply to each water cooling pipe 36 is of course shut 'off. When a new unit is mounted on the machine, care is taken to align the rollers axially with the Water cooling pipes sorthat the replaced unit may bev water cooledby opening the valves 40. 'Likewisein detaching a unit care is taken to remove the unit in the axial direction of the rollers so that the.

A roller mill including a su ort and a roller unit detachably mounted upon said support and arranged to be detached therefrom as a'unit comprising a bed frame for the support of the rollerv mg the said bearing boxes in slidable relation for adjusting the frictional contact between saidrollers, gear means in said unit for operating the said rollers, a motor mounted within the said bed frame and detachably operatively connected to said gear means, and means for securing said single base plate to the said bed frame in detachable relation whereby to remove the entire roller mill from the bed trancewand remov ing the grinding'rollersfrom said'wat'er cooling pipes and cooling means. 3
