The individual steam tubes may pass to and fro through a series of smoke tubes before passing through tubes e<1> to the header h<2>, and the last leg of the element may have a return bend portion wholly in the combustion chamber or extending some distance along a smoke tube ; the superheater may include elements of several such designs. One or more of the furnaces may be used for lighting up and contain no superheater tubes, the tubes in the corresponding smoke tubes being coupled to others which extend across another combustion chamber in order to raise the steam temperature.
