427,808. Valve gear. BRISTOL AEROPLANE CO., Ltd., and FEDDEN, A. H. R., Filton House, Bristol. Oct. 31, 1933, No. 30252. [Class 7 (vi)] In an engine having a number of valveoperating shafts distributed around a main driving-shaft, the valve-operating shafts are arranged in separate groups, the shafts of each group being geared together and to a pinion on the driving-shaft by a separate gear train for each group. The Figure shows an arrangement for a nine-cylinder radial sleeve-valve engine, in which the shafts of the nine sleeve-driving pinions 11 .. 19 are arranged in three groups about the central driving-pinion 21, each group having a separate gear train. Thus a compound idler gear 23 meshing with the pinion 21 drives the sleeve pinion 12 which actuates the sleeve pinions 11, 13 through idlers 26. Similarly, an idler gear 24 drives the sleeve pinions 14, 15, 16, and a third idler gear 25 the sleeve pinions 17, 18, 19. The cylinder and sleevevalve axes are indicated by the radii 1 .. 9, and the positions of the valve-actuating cranks by full lines drawn radially on the sleeve pinions, that for the pinion 11 being at A, and that for the pinion 12 at D. The pinions are made interchangeable one with the other. In order that the idler gears 23, 24, 25 may be interchangeable, the number of teeth on the pinion 21 must be a whole-number multiple of the number of groups of shafts. In order that the sleeve pinions 11 .. 19 may be interchangeable, the sum of the arcs AB, BC, and CD, measured in the direction of rotation of any two pinions and of the idler 26 connecting them, must be equal to a whole number of gear teeth. As an alternative, the outer pinions of a group may be of less face width than the middle pinions 12, 15, 18, so that these latter are interchangeable only among themselves. For ensuring correct assembling of the gears, each pinion is connected to its shaft by a splined arrangement having a master spline, or by other key devices ensuring that the pinion can be placed only in one angular position, and marks are scribed on the gear casing to indicate the correct positions of the valve-driving cranks. Alternatively, holes may be provided in the gears and casing to be brought into register, or an assembling jig may be used to hold all the sleeve cranks in position.
