Abstract
544,486. Valve gear ; lubricating. NAPIER & SON, Ltd., D., and HALFORD, F. B. Sept. 5, 1940, No. 13918. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] In engines with banks of cylinders arranged in U or H formation, the valves are actuated in pairs by means of shafts L arranged transversely of, and geared to, a shaft A arranged between the banks of cylinders and parallel to their crank shafts. In the form shown, the shafts L are driven through worm gearing M and actuate sleeve valves N<SP>1</SP> by means of cranks L<SP>1</SP>; but the shafts L may be provided with cams for actuating poppet valves. The shafts L are lubricated by means of a hollow interior communicating by radial passages L<SP>6</SP>, Fig. 4, with an annular groove R in the shaft bearing. The oil space within the shaft also communicates by ports L<SP>3</SP> with the cranks, and may be formed around a tube O fixed within the shaft, or between discs fitted in the ends of the shaft. In modifications, the annular groove R may be formed in the part L<SP>4</SP> to which the worm wheel is secured. Roller bearings P may be arranged to take end thrust; or thrust washers may be fitted ; or ball bearings may be used. Specification 515,621 is referred to.
