Abstract

340,757. Engine details. DAWSON, G. G., Ingleneuk, Western Road, East Finchley, London. Dec. 17, 1929, No. 38660. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi).] Valves; cylinders.-Inlet and exhaust are controlled by a pair of valves k, l oscillating in opposite directions in the cylinder head and bearing at their lower sides against a seating g having slight axial movement so as to be forced against the valves by the cylinder pressures, the movement of the outer valve being slight during the firing and compression strokes to reduce friction. The seating g may be formed integral with a cylinder liner f, and has screwed into it the sparking-plug j, which passes through a hole of slightly larger diameter in the cylinder walls so as to allow for the desired axial movement of the seating. The liner f may, how. ever, be omitted. The inner valve k comprises a cylindrical member formed with an exhaust recess k<4> and with a radial inlet port k<3> leading to a central bore k<2>. The induction pipe is secured to one end of the valve casing in line with the bore k<2>, and the exhaust pipe is attached at p. The outer. valve comprises a sleeve l having an exhaust port q, and a port r which is wider than the cylinder port h and is fitted with a cross-bar s which shields the inlet port k<3> from the exhaust flame. In a fourcylinder engine, the sleeve of the first cylinder is secured to the inner valves of the next two cylinders, and the sleeves of these two cylinders are secured to the inner valve of the fourth cylinder. Also the induction pipe may be connected to the middle valve sections. Valve-gear.-The two valves of the singlecylinder engine shown in Fig. 1 are actuated from cranks s<1>, t<1> driven at half-speed by pinions s', t and connected to the valves by rods s<2>, t<2> and split arms s<4>, t<4>. In the four-cylinder engine, the valves are all actuated from four cranks on a side shaft driven by chain gearing.
