Abstract

Solid substances containing molybdenum, especially metallurgical waste products or residues from destructive hydrogenation processes using molybdenum catalysts, are heated with an excess of sulphuric acid until the molybdenum compounds are decomposed, and molybdenum tri-sulphide then precipitated from the mixture, preferably after dilution and separation of residues, by sulphuretted hydrogen at elevated temperature, say at 80--100 DEG C., and under increased pressure. The substance may be roasted if necessary, say at 400--500 DEG C., before the sulphuric acid treatment, which may take place at 200--250 DEG C., when concentrated acid is employed or at 80--100 DEG C., when using dilute acid. In an example, the acid treatment is effected in stages. The acid solution remaining after precipitation of the molybdenum may be freed from sulphuretted hydrogen and re-used. The molybdenum sulphide obtained may be roasted to obtain the trioxide for conversion into alkali molybdate solutions, or be heated with aqueous ammonia and treated with oxidizing agents to obtain a solution of ammonium molybdate.
