Abstract
Phosphates, phosphites, arsenates, arsenites, antimonates, or antimonites of hafnium and zirconium are converted into soluble p compounds by treatment with a medium containing free hydrofluoric acid. The mixed phosphates may be obtained by treating a hafnium ore with carbon and chlorine or with a flux such as an alkali bisulphate, and adding phosphoric acid to the solution. The phosphates of hafnium and zirconium are then separated as a precipitate free from compounds of the other metals. The mixed phosphates are treated with a liquid containing free hydrofluoric acid, for instance a bifluoride solution, and the solution is then poured into an alkaline solution such as ammonia solution to precipitate the oxides, from which the double fluorides may be prepared. If ammonia has been used as a precipitant it is advisable to make the double ammonium fluorides. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) refers to the conversion of the compounds of hafnium or zirconium by the process described. The subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
