Abstract

In the recovery of sulphur from spent oxide by extraction with carbon disulphide the tar which is present as an impurity in the extract is converted into insoluble substances by treatment of the solution with concentrated sulphuric acid containing as activator a small proportion of silver sulphate, vanadium pentoxide, chromium trioxide, the dioxide of titanium, manganese, or tin, molybdenum trioxide, ammonium persulphate, or a chromate. The extract is separated from the insoluble matter and the sulphur recovered by distillation of the solvent.
