Abstract

In the partial oxidation of hydrogen sulphide-containing gas to produce a mixture comprising hydrogen sulphide and sulphur dioxide, and catalytic interaction of the hydrogen sulphide and sulphur dioxide to produce sulphur, unreacted hydrogen sulphide and sulphur dioxide are removed either together or in succession from the residual gas after the separation of sulphur by washing with one or more aqueous alkaline absorption solutions, and sulphur is subsequently recovered therefrom. The sulphur dioxide may be removed first by washing with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, or ammonium, hydroxide, carbonate or sulphide. The resulting solution may be heated under pressure in the presence or absence of acid or with acid at atmospheric pressure, the SO2 thereby liberated being returned to the process. The hydrogen sulphide may thereafter be removed by washing with an aqueous solution of caustic potash, ammonia, triethanolamine, or an alkali metal salt of an amino acid. The resulting solution may be freed from hydrogen sulphide by heating, the hydrogen sulphide liberated being returned to the process. If the hydrogen sulphide to be converted is obtained by washing from coke oven gas, using the same washing solution a common regeneration installation may be used. Hydrogen sulphide may be completely removed in a third washing step, e.g. with a solution of an alkali or alkaline earth metal hydroxide. The resulting sulphide solution may be used for washing and the sulphur dioxide. A similar solution obtained by washing out residual hydrogen sulphide from water-immiscible solvents, e.g. benzine, may also be used for washing out the sulphur dioxide. In the example the sulphur dioxide is removed by washing with ammonia solution containing sufficient ammonia to combine with the sulphur dioxide. The sulphur dioxide is then recovered by treatment with sulphuric acid while the sulphate produced is worked up to solid salt. The hydrogen sulphide is then removed by further washing with ammonia solution.
