Abstract

Integrated process for the purification of two S-contg. gas streams, specifically one contg. H2S and one SO2, with the subsequent prodn. of elemental sulphur, by (a) treating the H2S-contg. stream with an absorbent soln. containing an alkali to produce a sulphide-contg. effluent stream, (b) treating the SO2-contg. stream with a similar alkali soln. and a reducing agent (comprising finely divided S, a poly sulphide or a water-soluble sulphide) to give a water-soluble thiosulphate-contg. effluent stream, (c) combining the effluent streams from (a) and (b) and reducing them to form a polysulphide - contg. effluent stream (d) decomposing the polysulphide contg. stream to form elemental S, H2S and regenerated absorbent, (e) recycling at least a part of the H2s to step (a), and (f) recycling separate portions of the regenerated absorbent to steps (a) and (b). Simple and effective process without mixing the two gas streams and with the minimum prodn. of sulphate by-products. The absorbent solns. are easy to regenerate, under mild comditions, without the use of catalysts.
