Abstract

Gases containing both sulphuretted hydrogen and sulphur dioxide are scrubbed with a solution or suspension of an alkali or alkaline earth hydrate or carbonate whereby the gases are rendered innocuous and thiosulphates are produced. Gases containing considerable quantities of carbon dioxide and poor in sulphuretted hydrogen and sulphur dioxide may be treated with a suspension of finely-divided limestone at 60 DEG C., when the sulphur dioxide and sulphuretted hydrogen are completely absorbed, with formation of calcium thiosulphate.
