Abstract

11,694. Lawes & Co., J. B., and Davis, W. A. May 18. Tartaric acid is obtained from the usual raw materials by the use of an excess of a strong calcium-chloride solution, in the following manner. The raw material is mixed with the calciumchloride solution and chalk or lime, the chalk being mixed with the chloride before the raw material or before the whole of the potassium bitartrate is dissolved ; and the calcium tartrate, after washing, is decomposed by sulphuric acid. The filtrate from the calcium tartrate containing calcium and potassium chlorides is repeatedly used with more raw material until the concentration of the potassium chloride makes dilution necessary in order to use the solution again. The dilution may be effected with the washings from the calciumtartrate precipitate.
