Abstract
2520. Imray, O., [Society of Chemical Industry in Basle]. Feb. 1. Camphor is obtained by treating isoborneol, suspended or emulsified in water, with a hypochlorite such as chloride of lime or sodium hypochlorite, with or without an oxygen carrier. The hypochlorite may be formed during the operation, e.g. by electrolyzing a mixture of the emulsion with a chloride, such as sodium, potassium, or calcium chloride, or by passing chlorine into a mixture of the emulsion with caustic alkali. Oxygen carriers, such as manganese dioxide, potassium bichromate, or salts of nickel or cobalt, may also be used.
