Abstract

9774. Imray, O., [Farbwerke vorm. Meister, Lucius, & Br³ning]. April 26. Phenylglycine and its homologues. - Phenylglycine and its homologues are prepared by the action of chloracetic acid on aniline and its homologues in presence of an oxide or carbonate of , a heavy metal, such as ferrous hydrate. In an example, ferrous-chloride solution is precipitated by soda lye or sodium carbonate, common salt is added, and the mixture is heated ; chloracetic acid is added and then aniline and the whole is heated ; the product is filtered, washed, stirred with water, and decomposed by soda lye or sodium carbonate ; aniline is distilled off with steam, the residue is filtered, and the phenylglycine is precipitated from the filtrate by dilute acid. Tolylglycines are prepared similarly from toluidines. In another example, iron-sulphate solution is precipitated by soda lye, and salt, chloracetic acid, and aniline are added as above and the whole is boiled, filtered, and washed ; aniline is distilled off by steam and the residue is stirred with water, treated with caustic potash, and filtered ; the solution is evaporated down, and the potassium salt obtained may be used as such or may be converted into the glycine.
