Abstract

12,585. Imray, O., [Basle Chemical Works]. July 12. Sulphonic chlorides of the formula in which X represents an alkyl group such as methyl or ethyl, are produced by the process described in Specification No. 4525, A.D. 1900. For example, the o-sulphonic chloride of methyl benzoate is obtained by acting upon methyl-o-sulphonic-benzoate in caustic alkali solution with chlorine, and filtering off the insoluble product. It melts at 64‹-65‹ C. Alternatively, methyl-osulphinic - benzoate suspended in water may be used. Sulphonamides are produced directly from the corresponding sulphinic acids by dissolving them in excess of concentrated ammonia, diluting with alcohol, and passing chlorine into the solution at 35‹-40‹ C. An example is given in which o-toluenesulphonamide is thus produced from o-toluene sulphinic acid. Saccharin is produced in the form of its ammonium salt by acting with chlorine upon an ethereal salt of o-sulphinic-benzoic acid in a solution containing an excess of ammonia. The solution is evaporated, the ammonium salt is extracted by alcohol, and saccharin is precipitated from an aqueous solution of the ammonium salt by hydrochloric acid. Part of the ammonia may be replaced by another alkali.
