Abstract

An aqueous solution containing thiocyanate, thiosulphate and phenols and having a pH value of 8.4 or less is treated with ozone whereby the thiocyanate and thiosulphate are oxidised in preference to the phenols. Efluent from a coke oven or a coal carbonisation plant is passed through a fixed ammonia still, suspended lime removed, the pH value reduced by adding sulphuric acid, and the solution is then sprayed down a glass tube against a counterstream of ozonised oxygen or ozonised air.
