Abstract

PURPOSE: To desulfurize a coke oven gas efficiently without forming sulfur, by bringing the coke oven gas into contact with an absorbent solution containing an alkali, and oxidizing hydrogen sulfide absorbed in the solution with a redox substance contained in the gas as a catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: A coke oven gas 1 is brought into contact with an absorbent solution 3 containing an alkali in a column 2 to absorb and remove hydrogen sulfide and give a desulfurized gas 4. On the other hand, the hydrogen sulfide in the solution 3 is oxidized in the presence of a catalyst consisting of a gas 6 containing oxygen and a redox substance contained in the gas 1 in a column 5, and the absorbent solution 3 is then reacted with hydrogen cyanide absorbed simultaneously in the column 2 to give a thiocyanate, and further simple sulfur, water-soluble salts of thiosulfate and sulfate. The catalyst is a water-soluble substance, e.g. side-chain phenol cyclic polyhydric phenol or quinone. The absorbent solution 3 is taken out partially as a blow 10 to keep the desulfurization ratio and a catalyst 7, e.g. sodium β-naphthoquinonesulfonate, water 8, and an alkali source 9 are supplied thereto.
