Abstract

424,899. Momentum apparatus for raising liquids. GILKES & GORDON, Ltd., G., and CREWDSON, E., Kendal, Westmorland. Sept. 12, 1934, No. 27500/33. [Class 102 (ii)] In apparatus of the type in which a column of liquid is oscillated in a drive pipe 7 by means of a reciprocating piston 12 and an air chamber 4, closed by a float valve 5, arranged at the lower end of the drive pipe, the chamber 4 is supplied with compressed air at starting by means of a pipe 6. The apparatus may be single-acting, or double-acting as shown, the pipe 7 being connected by branches 20, 21 to the ends of the cylinder 9. In the position shown the piston 12 has completed its movement to the left and the air compressed in the chamber 4 discharges liquid through a passage 23 in the piston and ports 25 to the discharge pipe 26. When the valve 5 closes the momentum of the liquid in the pipe 7 draws in liquid through the foot-valve 2. At the completion of the movement of the piston 12 to the right liquid is discharged through the branch 21 and a passage 24 in the piston 12. A flap-valve 22 controls communication between the pipe 7 and the branches 20, 21. Air vessels 16, 17, 18 are provided.
