Abstract

Actuating by liquid pressure ; buckets ; singleacting suction-valveless bucket pumps ; singleacting bucket pumps.-A pump actuated by the pressure of a head of water comprises a cylinder a and a piston c open on its upper surface to the pressure of the high-level water and carrying an air-chamber e and tube d, which slides watertight on a fixed tube b opening into a delivery pipe i. During the downstroke, the space in the cylinder a below the air chamber e is connected by a rotatable valve n to the low-level water, and at the end of the downstroke this valve is operated by the piston c by means of a rod with stops y, z and a liquid-pressure servo-motor t, u, v to connect this space to the high-level water, so that the upstroke is effected by the buoyancy of the air-chamber. During the upstroke a valve h in the piston opens and permits high-level water or other liquid conveyed by a pipe to the valve to pass into the tube d, and during the downstroke the valve closes and this liquid is forced through the pipe i and valve k. In another form, the pump is situated under the low-level water, the air vessel is dispensed with, the liquid to be pumped enters the tube d through the pipe i provided with a non-return valve, and the pipe r communicates with the high-level water.
