Abstract

423,152. Treating and drying artificial silk. VEREINIGTE GLANZSTOFF-FABRIKEN AKT.-GES., Elberfeld, Wuppertal, Germany. June 14, 1934, No. 17678. Convention date, June 14, 1933. [Classes 2 (ii) and 15 (i)] [See also Group XIII] A process for the wet treatment and drying of freshly spun artificial silk in a continuous operation comprises guiding the threads in helical turns over a rotating cylinder or simultaneously over a group of adjacent coacting rotating cylinders, subjecting them to the known wet treatment processes at the commencement zone of the cylinder or group of cylinders, and drying them in a further zone of the cylinder or group of cylinders, the drying being effected by causing a high-temperature heating medium to act directly upon those parts of the cylinders in the drying zone upon which the turns of artificial silk do not rest or are not resting at the time of such action. The heating medium, e.g. high-temperature combustion gas, may be caused to act either internally or externally upon the cylinder. In the former case the drying zone of the cylinder preferably consists of a conducting fire-proof material such as nickel or steel, and in the latter case it preferably consists of non-conducting fire-proof material such as earthenware or porcelain. The apparatus of Fig. 1 comprises a pair of inclined cylinders 1 and 2 around which the filaments pass in helical turns. The upper cylinder is provided at one end and on the side nearest the lower cylinder with a gas burner 5, and the lower cylinder is provided at the opposite end with spraying pipes 3 and 4. The upper cylinder preferably consists of porous porcelain. In the apparatus of Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown) the heating means comprise surface burners which are applied to both cylinders. In a modification (not shown) in which only one cylinder is used, the drying zone, which consists of porcelain, is separated from the treating zone by means of a narrow insulating zone. For guiding the filaments in regular helical turns, a roller is provided the axis of which forms an acute angle with the axis of the cylinder. In the apparatus of Fig. 6, the heat is applied internally by means of a burner 24, and the filaments are guided by means of freely running guide rollers 25.
