Abstract

1346182 Producing crimped filaments ERNEST SCRAGG & SONS Ltd 15 Feb 1972 [18 Feb 1971] 4910/71 Heading B5B Crimped filaments are produced by fibrillating films which have been passed through the nip of two plain rollers which are at different temperatures. The film is drawn during this passage so that the draw point or region of necking is at or close to the nip. After drawing the film is cooled immediately downstream of the nip and conventionally fibrillated. In the illustrated embodiment the film 10 is supplied via godet rollers 11 to nip rollers 12, 13 which rotate faster than the rollers 11. The rollers are preferably heated internally, roller 12 being hotter than roller 13. The film passes under cooling means 16 to godet rollers 15 and then under heater 17, cooling means 19 to godet rollers 18 which rotate faster than rollers 15 to effect a second stretching. The stretched film is then fibrillated. Temperature conditions are disclosed for rollers 12, 13 for films made of polyamides, polyesters and polypropylene.
