Abstract

1350588 Drawing filaments ERNEST SCRAGG & SONS Ltd 17 Nov 1971 [21 Nov 1970] 55493/70 Heading B5B [Also in Division D1] In a method of processing undrawn or partially drawn multifilament thermoplastic yarn, the yarn 10 advanced from a supply 11 by a feed roller system 12 is drawn in a first heating zone 13, which maintains the yarn at a temperature at which it is in a drawable condition, and is then passed, with little or no cooling, through a second heating zone 14,which maintains the yarn at a heat-setting temperature, the yarn then being passed through a cooling zone C and a false-twisting zone 15 before being passed through a draw-roller system 16 which is effecting the drawing in the first heating zone; after leaving the draw-roller system 16 the yarn passes through a third heating zone 17, which maintains the yarn at a heat-setting temperature, the yarn being passed through the zone 17 at an overfeed of 10% to 40% and then being passed to a winding zone 19. The yarn material processed is preferably polyester, the draw temperature being between 90‹ C. and 115‹ C. preferably 105‹ C., and the heat setting temperature being between 150‹ C. and 200‹ C. preferably 175‹ C. The draw ratio is preferably in the range 1 : 1À5 to 1 : 5. The first and second heating means may be in the form of first and second sections of a composite heater block or tube, the sections preferably being separated by a layer of insulating material. The first and second heating means may be in the form of separate, but closely adjacent, heater blocks or tubes. In a further embodiment, the first heating means is a stationary heated cylindrical pin adjacent the end of a heater block or tube which is the second heating means. In another embodiment, the first heating means is in the form of one or more rotatably driven heated roller(s). The roller speed is set at more than or equal to the yarn speed after the roller, or preferably less than or equal to the yarn speed approaching the roller. In the case of the first heating means being a stationary pin, the pin may have a ceramic, satin-chrome or matt-chrome surface finish. The false twist means is preferably a spindle, friction twister, or fluid jet twister. The cooling zone C is preferably at least as long as the heating zone 14.
