Abstract

1,142,617. Crimping yarns. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 21 June, 1966 [16 July, 1965], No. 30270/65. Headings D1F and D1W. A bulked multifilament yarn containing not less than 66% of heterofilaments having an out of phase helical crimp is produced by taking a supply yarn with at least 66% of heterofilaments, inserting a false twist therein, beating sufficiently during the insertion of false twist to retain some twist liveliness allowing the filament in the yarn to separate as a result of the twisting and untwisting, and then subjecting the yarn to a relaxation step possibly with heating to develop the heterofilament crimp. The finished yarn has a twist liveliness of not more than 2.5 and preferably less than 0.8 turns/cm. The yarn preferably has a crimp retraction of at least 15%. The false twist is preferably applied to the yarn during the drawing operation. The insertion of false twist during drawing may be effected by the apparatus of Specification 890,053. Heterofilaments which may be used are those of two polyamide components such as polyhexamethylene adipamide and a copolymer thereof with polyepsilon caprolactum or two polyesters e.g. two polyethylene terephthalates with differing molecular weights. The yarn, in fabric form if desired may be subjected to a hot relaxation process to redevelop the crimp which is pulled out in the winding and other processes.
