1420076 Yarns IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 2 April 1973 [12 April 1972] 16830/72 Headings D1F and D1W In a composite yarn such as described in Patent Specification 1258905 and comprising a core component of set false-twisted synthetic continuous filaments and at least one wrapping component of synthetic continuous filaments which are formed in helices the directions of which reverse at intervals along the yarn, the core yarn has a decitex (the weight in grams of 10,000 metres measured under sufficient tension such that the core component is straight but not extended) of 120-400 and the core component has a decitex between 25 and 4% of that of the yarn. Yarn is "high order" or "low order" according to whether the filaments of the wrapping component are continuously or intermittently applied, these filaments having individual decitex of 2.5-7.5. Filaments e.g. of nylon or polyethylene terephthalate, for core and/or wrapping components may be physically and/or aesthetically different or similar e.g. as regards birefringence, natural draw ratio, cross-sectional shape (circular or trilobal) colour and/or dyeing affinity and/or may be bifilor or conjugate. In the manufacture of the yarn, using apparatus such as described in Patent Specification 1258905 and wherein the two components are supplied to, in sequence, a feed means, a heating zone, a cooling zone and a (frictional) false-twisting element, they are withdrawn therefrom under a higher tension than that under which they are supplied such that the filaments are drawn 1.5 to 6 times their feed length, the filamentary components differing as to their extensibility under the stresses on entering the yarn section of increasing twist gradient. The ratio of the decitex of the component of greater extensibility to the decitex of the component of lesser extensibility is within the range 1.5:1 to 3:1. The components may be subsequently modified by heat treatment under a controlled tension and temperature conditions.
