Abstract

1441923 Spinning and finishing yarns IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 8 Aug 1973 [15 Aug 1972] 38003/72 Headings D1F and D1W In a process for making variable knap yarn, a first filamentary comiponent is passed from a feed means through, in sequence, heating, falsetwisting and knap-forming zones and a second filamentary component is introduced, by positive or free feed, between the feed means and false-twisting zone so that it becomes wrapped around the first component and subsequently formed into knaps by Ibeing rubbed back by a friction device e.g. a ceramic guide. The components may comprise a synthetic e.g. polyester, monofilament, continuous filament yarn or a bonded yarn or a combination of any one thereof with discontinuous fibres and continuous filament(s) or discontinuous fibres e.g. of a polyamide, or a combination thereof. Variations in the size and frequency of occurence of knaps is effected by altering the feed rate of the second component, the count thereof or the frictional properties of the knap-forming device. Knap yarns which have been oppositely false-twisted may be doubled or intertwisted e.g. by one turn per inch, to form knitting yarn. As shown, a multifilament yarn 1 withdrawn from package 3, through a tensioner 4 and guide 5 by nip rolls 9 and 11, passes through a guide 13, a heater plate 15, falsetwisting pin 17 or an annular friction twister (not shown). A multifilament yarn 19 withdrawn under low tension from package 21 through a guide 23, wraps helically and unidirectionally around yarn 1 at a point which oscillates. In the resultant combined core yarn 24, which is heat set on plate 15, the sheath possesses (along the length of the yarn) portions of 'S' and 'Z' twist separated by portions without significant twist. The yarn then passes over a friction guide 25, Fig. 2 (not shown) which forms the knaps 35 along the core which travels therewith through nip rolls 29 and 31 to be wound into a package 33.
