As shown crimped filaments are continuously produced from thermoplastic synthetic filaments crimpable by stretching or by heat treatement after stretching by feeding the extruded unstretched filament from bobbin 1 through rollers 3 and 4 towards a stretching zone provided with a driving roll 5 and associated separate roll 6. Various stretching arrangements can be used such as the combination of a draw pin 7 and draw roll 9 and separate roll 10, or the combination of draw pin 7, hot plate 8 and rolls 9 and 10, or simple cold stretching between rolls moving at different speeds. The stretched filament 21 then passes through ejector 11 and pipe 12 and is blown together with the gaseous fluid supplied to the ejector on to a perforated plate 14 which surrounds a rotatable drum 13, which carries the stretched filament while relaxation, crimping and heat setting are performed. The filament may be heat treated on perforated plate 14 by means 16 and after having travelled through a half circle on drum 13 the filament is wound on to a cone or cheese 19. The crimping and fixing are thus completed while the filament is in a relaxed state on plate 14 which travels at a lower velocity than that at which the stretched filament is introduced into the relaxing zone. The unstretched filament may be a monofilament or a conjugate filament of at least two polymers having different viscosities of different compositions in side by side or eccentric sheathcore arrangements. Examples disclose the crimping of a polypropylene filament, a conjugate filament of nylon 6 and a copolymer of #-caprolactam, nylon 66 and nylon 67 salt, and a conjugate filament of poly(ethylene - diphenoxy ethane 4: 4<SP>1</SP> dicarboxylate) and polyethylene terephthalate.
