A yarn composed of continuous filaments of filament-forming materials capable of being brought to a plastic state, e.g. cellulose derivatives such as cellulose acetate, polyamides such as polyhexamethylene adipamide, polysulphones, polyaminotriazoles, polyesters such as polyethylene terephthalate, vinyl polymers and copolymers such as vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymer, is rendered voluminous by virtue of crimp imparted to the filaments; the yarn is made plastic, as by heat and/or steam treatments, twist, e.g. 23-122 turns per inch, is imparted (as by use of a false-twist spindle) and then removed (as by the same spindle) and the yarn is relaxed to a controlled degree, e.g. by 10-50 per cent, as by passage between pairs of draw rolls the second of which receive the yarn at a lower speed than the first. As shown, a bobbin 11 supplies yarn 12 which passes through a guide 13, tension gate 14 or feeding rollers (not shown), guide 15 into a heating chamber 16, wherein it is rendered plastic, through a falsetwist spindle 17 of the type shown in Specification 752,526, then through guide 18 and sets of draw rolls 19 and 21 driven by belts 22 and 23 or gears (not shown) at differential speeds, and guide 24 to a take-up bobbin 25. Fig. 2 shows a modified take-up apparatus comprising guide 35, traverse guide 37, and bobbin 38 driven by a toll 39 at a speed so related to the speed at which the yarn leaves the rolls 19 that a desired relaxation of the yarn occurs.
