Abstract

720,590. Glass fibres. RIEDEL, J. C. Sept. 1, 1953 [Sept. 5, 1952], No. 24134/53. Class 56. The ends of glass rods 11 from which filaments are spun are heated by means located in recesses 2 away from the spinning operation, the heat being, at least partially, intercepted by screening. A screening member 6 of ceramic material is inserted into a refractory block 1 and rests on asbestos or like plates 9. Vertical bores 7 into which the glass is fed by rollers 10 lead to a space 8 in which the rods 11 are preheated. The inside of block 1 is lined with high grade ceramic material, preferably porcelain. In a modification, which may be used for quartz glass, the heating recesses are completely enclosed in ceramic, preferably porcelain, pipes. The sides of the block converge towards the top and no separate screening member is required.
