Abstract

In a method and apparatus for processing heat softenable mineral materials, a melting chamber 216, having an opening for entry of solid materials, such as glass balls 241, has at its lower outlet a walled passage 248 leading to an inlet opening in the roof 250 of a feeder chamber 206 which is substantially unvented and is provided with an orificed floor, through which fibres S are drawn, means being provided for heating independently the melting chamber 216 and the feeder chamber 206 and the walled passage 248 being of such cross-sectional area as to restrict the flow of fluid material from the melting chamber 216 to the feeder chamber 206 and having conducting means, such as plates, 256 extending downwardly within the feeder chamber to flow the material in the form of a film. The apparatus is similar to that disclosed in Specification 863,090 and includes the heating and heat regulating means as in that apparatus. <PICT:0959950/C1/1>
